New School and Bridge!
Although building of schools does not sound like an acƟvity that
would be directly related to conservaƟon, such community
development projects can be a very important aspect of recruiƟng local
support of our objecƟves. DLC‐SC has been asked to manage a grant
from the Seacology
FoundaƟon to build a
school
and
footbridge over a
river (to ensure rainy
season school access)
in the village of
Antsahaberaoka, which is in a
remote area squeezed against the
edge of Marojejy NaƟonal Park.
These
educaƟonal
community
development projects are explicitly
in exchange for renewed protecƟon
of that region of
Marojejy, where
Erik’s team had
found
an
unusually high density of silky sifakas several years ago. Oversight
of the construcƟon will be a collaboraƟve effort of the local CISCO
(school district), MNP, and DLC‐SC, which will strengthen our
relaƟonships with these key organizaƟons. Being involved in the
construcƟon of a school in such a remote and sensiƟve zone near
the Park will only reinforce our conservaƟon efforts in the area.
Stay tuned for construcƟon updates in future newsleƩers!
